You took some beautiful pictures with your new digital camera during your vacation to Las Vegas, and want to share it with your friends across the world. You attach all the pictures to an e-mail and send them out from your workstation using MS Outlook and a mailing list. The total size of the attachments is around 3 MB and your mailing list contains over 100 e-mail addresses. Do you think doing this was ethical or should you have used some other approach? Give logical reasons for your point of view.

Explanation / Answer

No, it is not ethical to use the company’s resources for personal use. One may use to some extent for any important personal use. As an employee is serving the company, he may have rights in using the company’s mail for personal use or using any other resources. But the flexibility given should not be misused or used excessively so that it affects the company. Though the loss to the company may not be more in doing so, but it does not be ethical. As size of the attachments is nearly 3 MB and also sent to 100 recipients means the usage of Internet is very high. So it is not recommended in doing so for personal use. One can user various other options like uploading the pictures in a photo sharing website or any other source and can share the link to people. It doesn’t require attaching the pictures to each recipient. The link can be simply forwarded to the users whoever is needed to share.
