1. In order to connect systems to a wired network first ensure that one end of the cable is plugged into the ethernet port of the computer while the other end of the computer is plugged in into a switch or a routers depending on the network we wish to have.One this connection is established we can connect our device to the network using the folling steps:
a) Firsly Click on start menu and then select the control panel option from there.
b)After this Select "network and internet" from the control panel
c)This should be followed by selecting the "network and sharing center"
d)From the Tasks section on the left, select " change adapter settings".
e) Then perform Right-click the "Local Area Network" icon and select " Properties".
f)From the User Access Control window, click CONTINUE.
g) After clicking continue please select Internet protocol version 4 (TCP/IPv4), and then click the PROPERTIES button.
h)Always make sure to obtain an ip address automotically and obtain an DNS server automatically are selected.
i) Follow this by clicking the ok button to close the other open windows.
j)Perform a restart to the computer to load the settings.
k) After this log on to perform the system to apply the new setting to the system
2.The various characteristics that make fiber optic cables different from other forms of cabling are:
a)They are non-conductive:Mostly conductve cabling results in ground loops causing damage to the devices. Fiber-optic cables eliminate this by avoiding the metal in their design.As a result of this they help in overcoming ground loops and protecting the device from surge damage.
b)No sparks: Some devices produces sparks that could lead to a fire. Fiber-optic cables dont produce any sparks since they do not have any current folowing through them.
c)Easily Installed:They can be easily installed as they are small-size,lightweight and extremely flexible to go through ventillation ducts of the buildings very easily.
d)Extremely high bandwidth over long distances: They provide high speed signals over long distances without any repeaters. .They have more distance carrying capacity than the coaxial cables .As a result of this data can travel fast and to great distances in the shortest possible time.This is one of the most important reason to install this type of cable.
e)Provides data security: magnetic fields results in leaking on the information to the outside world.This is avoided by these cable as there are no radiated magnetic fields around the optical fiber,the fields are confined within fiber.

It is being used in military today as it is lightweight and has high bandwidth.optical cabling is an excellent choice for the military's retrieval and deployment applications.

3.The various network devices are:
a)Hubs:These are basically used to connect devices to a network via twisting pair cabling.They help in transferring packets to other devices without altering or interfering other transmitted packets.They transmit the information regardless of the fact if data packet is destined for the device connected or not.
b)Switches:It is different from the hubs as. hubs tranmits data to all the ports of a device whereas switch send the data only the port which is connected to a destination device.A switch does so by having an in-built learning of the MAC address of the devices connected to it.Dat transmission and speeds is extremely high as compare to a hub as it works in full duplex form as data can besent and recived simultaneously.
c)Router: It has the ability to connect various dissimilar LAN'S and there by resulting in large complex networks using complex routing. It can limit the flow of broadcasts.It can help a lot of devices to connect to an internet.When it receives dats,It reads the header of data packet to determine the destination address.After this it searches in its routing table to get know how to reach the destination and then forwards the packet to the higher hop on the route.
d)Gateways: They are used to connect multiple networks together.It forms a link beween them by passing packets from one network to another. A router is a form of gateway.
The things necessary for internet connectivity include:
a)Internet service provider: It provides an access to the internet. To use this first create an account with isp the same way you do for a telephone..
b)Hardware: For usingthe internet with a broadband connection , such as Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) or cable, we will need a DSL or cable modem. This might be included as part of the start-up hardware which might be given by the ISP when we sign up with a given isp to use to access to the internet. If we plan to set up a network in order to share Internet access with multiple computers, we will needing a router. For a dial-up connection, we need a dial-up modem. Many computers come with a dial-up modem already installed.
To connect to the internet follow these steps:
->Firstly Open the Connect to the Internet wizard by clicking the Start button .
->After this click on Control Panel.
->In the search box, type network,
->The follow this by clicking Network and Sharing Center
->Moreover click "Set up a new connection or network"
->Finally double-click Connect to the Internet.
4.The process to install a network adapter by loading a driver file manually includes:
a) Firstly we will plug the adapter into the PCI slot of the computer and follow this by starting the computer.
b)The computer will detect the adapter automatically .As a result of this the Found New Hardware Wizard will appear, please Select Install from a list or specific location (Advanced) followed by clicking on Next button.
c) After clicking the next button ,Select Don´t search. I will choose the driver to install followed by clicking on Next button.
d)After this choose “network adapters” and click Next.
e)The step d should be followed by clicking on Have Disk.
f)Follow the step e by ->Locate File window will appear, please locate and select the correct driver file which is for your Operating System and then click Open button.
g)Morever click on Next button and then wait for the driver to be installed completed.
Differences between LAN AND WAN.
LAN(LOCAL AREA NETWORK):
a)It is a network which usually covers a small area which can be a home/school .
b)It has extremely high data transfer rates and provides speeds upto 1000mbps,
c)It is usually owned by a single person or organisation.
d)It provides a very high bandwidth with less congestion
WAN(WIDE AREA NETWORK):
a)It covers a big area like regional or national boundaried to longer distances.
b)It has lower data transfer rates than lan's and speeds upto 150mbps.
c)It usually exists under collective or distributed ownership and management over long distances
d)It prvides low bandwidth for data and more congestion.
