Question

1.Suppose you are travelling to Cozumel, Mexico for scuba diving over spring break. Because you can speak some Spanish you decide to stay in local hotel rather than large resort.

What cultural difference will you expect to find at a local hotel? Consider such things as amenities in the room, interaction with staff, timeliness of responses to requests and so on.

What will you need to consider as you plan to negotiate with a dive master to take you out to the reefs?

How will you negotiate for local arts and crafts at the market?

2. What steps can you take to be sure that you achieve your goals in mixed dyad negotiation (male/female)?

a. If you are female are there particular errors you might be prone to make, and if so what can you do to avoid them?

b. If you are male, consider the ways you might negotiate differently with a female than with another male. Should it be any different? Explain why or why not.

3. Assume that you have been offered a job by a company located in Dallas, Texas. Your currently live in Florida and will be graduating from the college in a month. The human resource manager of the Dallas Company wants to talk to you about the terms of the proposed employment contract, which includes a non-compete provision, meaning that if you quit your job with the company, you won't be able to work for one of its competitors for one year. If you take the job in Dallas, you will also need to buy a new car (your job will require a significant amount of car travel) and find an apartment to rent.

Would it make sense of any of these three negotiations – the negotiation over the terms of your employment contract, the negotiation for a new car purchase, and the negotiation of locating an apartment in Dallas—to use the services of an agent (The Use of Agents in Negotiation)? Why or Why not?

Explanation / Answer

Answer (1)

We are travelling to Cozumel, Mexico for scuba diving over spring break. I can speak some Spanish and decided to stay in local hotel rather than large resort. The cultural differences that I expect to see at the hotel is that the team at hotel will be more cooperative than large resort team. The response time is great and proper focus will be given to customer as being a small hotel. They have low customers so they can manage the customers well. The cultural behavior of the hotel staff will be great and they will be willing to support better than the best. The staff will be keen to have interaction, as they want to satisfy their customer to the extent possible. Overall the small hotel stay looks to be great and will result in great stay.

Negotiations with Dive Master - Since my plan for the visit to enjoy the diving in this spring season at this location. So the diving master is the key to achieve my desires on diving. For better negotiations , I will plan as below

Negotiation with local arts and crafts at the market - The negotiation with local arts and craft market is basically cost centered negotiations. Here we need to negotiate the shopkeepers with respect to the cost and quantities. The shopkeepers are keen to sell their products as much as they can. The shopkeepers will be ready to lower the price upon increase in quantity. The use of local langugae and the local discussion topics will be more helpful during the negotiations. Spending more time and talking for more time will also help in better negotiations.
