Question
1. Recommend actions Lauren should teke now to resolve these conflicts.
2. Discuss what Lauren could have done to prevent the conflicts from occurring in hte first place.
Lauren is assigned team leader of a cross-functional team for a very important project to the company. Lauren reviews the profiles of the six team members her boss gave her. She is both intrigued and anxious when she sees that team members are geographically dispersed.
Lauren works in the Atlanta office. One team member is in India; another is in Germany; and the rest live in the United States, but in different time zones. Two staff members are in the eastern time zone (Virginia and North Carolina) and two staff members are in the central time zone (Texas and Louisiana).
Lauren has never managed a virtual team and is unsure what special skills it will take to be successful. She begins to wonder what competencies are necessary for virtual team leaders and members. She studies the team member profiles and creates a matrix to evaluate each member’s strengths and weaknesses from the perspective of working virtually. She includes herself because she realizes she needs to evaluate her own strengths and weaknesses. Lauren thinks about the challenges and opportunities she will face managing this virtual team.

Explanation / Answer
Lauren should take the time to conduct individual meetings to get to know each of the members and also conduct weekly meetings as well to review what has been done during the week.
According to the matrix Lauren prepared, each member of the team has different communication preferences but it must be established a standard for the Friday meetings, but there is the challenge of different time zones, they need to conduct the meeting early Friday morning right before Santosh or Helga get out of work.
Half of the team do not have virtual experience including Lauren, this is a challenge that Lauren needs to work, she could ask for advice from the team members who have experience on virtual working.
Another challenge Lauren has is that each member has different communication preference, but on today’s world I believe each of them should be using at least email so it should be mandatory for all members to communicate via email, if there is an emergency a phone call could work as well.
There is a mix of strengths and weaknesses on the team, Lauren should make Santosh to work with Adam for example to complement each other since the strength of one is the weakness of the other, and should do the same with others.
