The "Dark Web" came in news with the shut down of Silk Road - an on line marketplace for illegal commodities. silk road operated within the confines of the "Dark Web" that operated its own DNS operated by several "volunteers" . It is almost as if the "Dark Web" is a world that runs disconnected and completely parallel to the WWW that we know about. Not even the DNS is shared.

I really am not sure how the "Dark Web" works and my basic question is where does the "Dark Web" start , once I send my (specially encrypted ) packet? Does it go through my ISP's router? Does it use an IP address (possibly unnamed) at all? Numerous things remain to investigate. I found that you need a special TOR browser to get into the TOR network of the "Dark Web". But what makes this TOR packet undetectable to even my ISP if they wanted to?

Please go over the link and comment on the Dark Web. Supporters of Dark Web also contain political dissidents and whistle blowers, who do not trust the public Internet to spread their ideas for the fear of network survelliance.  Do you think Dark Web would exist if the Internet were not subjected to surveillance and traffic analysis by political entities?

Web is the service which is being used by most of the users today by using Internet as it's media.
The Dark Web is a term that refers specifically to a collection of websites that are publicly visible, but hide
the IP addresses of the servers that run them. Thus they can be visited by any web user, but it is very difficult to work out who is behind the sites. And you cannot find these sites using search engines.
Almost all sites on the so-called Dark Web hide their identity using the Tor encryption tool.
You can use Tor to hide your identity, and spoof your location.

Tor is an open source software to protects you by bouncing your communications
around a distributed network all around the world. Tor prevents somebody watching
your internet connection when you visits your interested web sites.

Some of the Dark Web sites include the Silk Road . The Silk Road was a website for the buying and selling of recreational drugs. But there are legitimate uses for the Dark Web. People operating within closed, totalitarian societies can use the Dark Web to communicate with the outside world.
In my opinion , Dark Web would exist if the Internet were not subjected to surveillance and traffic analysis by political entities. Hence most of the web sites will be like dark Web sites if they include more political issues and open new ways of using these web sites in the coming days.
