he 15.6" HP Pavilion 15 laptop is aimed mainly at those seeking a machine for multimedia and general home use. Today, we're reviewing the Beats Special Edition, which has the headphone brand's trademark colour scheme. It promises the "best-sounding, richest audio on a PC", and the set-up is based around an AMD APU and mechanical hard-drive, which the manufacturer claims will be great for a wide range of uses. Personally, we're a bit sceptical, but let's have a look...

The chassis of the special edition HP Pavilion 15 uses Beats' trademark colours. Entirely made of plastic, the machine's base is coloured red, while the lid and palm rest are black. This laptop certainly won't go unnoticed, nor will the fact that it has more Beats logos than HP ones... Build quality is good, with no play at all between the panels. It's just a shame that fingerprints are so visible.
The chiclet keyboard is pretty nice to use; the keys, well spaced and of a good size, have a lovely soft-touch coating. The rebound isn't really consistent enough for truly comfortable typing, but it shouldn't stop you typing away for a good few hours. As well as a number pad, there are all the usual shortcuts you'd expect from this type of machine: screen brightness, pause, play, volume etc. The touchpad is a decent size and supports all the Windows 8.1 gestures.
Connectivity options are very good. On the left, there are two USB 3.0 ports, HDMI and Ethernet, and on the right, there's a USB 2.0 port, a headphone/mic combo jack socket and a DVD rewriter.

Wireless options consist of Wi-Fi b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0. The Wi-Fi gives a stable signal strength of -48 dBm between 5 and 10 m. It falls to -54 dBm at 20 m.
his laptop isn't as good at regulating its temperature, though. We measured a maximum of 57.4°C at the vent on the left of the chassis. With the real heat limited to this area, it won't bother the user. But be careful never to obstruct the cooling vent! The noise generated by the laptop is very low, never exceeding 40.5 dB(A).

With HP pairing up with Beats to produce this laptop, and making it so obvious in the design, we really were expecting something much better than what other laptops have to offer. It wouldn't even have been that difficult! And yet this laptop still failed to impress.

The headphone jack socket is simply abysmal. The volume is totally different for each channel, so one headphone speaker is much louder than the other. And stereo image is non-existent, owing to the absolutely appalling reproduction of lower frequencies. On top of that, distortion levels are very high. We really can't recommend using headphones with this laptop!It's all well and good giving a laptop the Beats logo and colours, but they really should have put more work into the actual sound quality. Behind the Beats colours, all you'll find is an appalling screen, terrible audio and a shocking battery life. All it's then left with is good build-quality and quiet running noise. Suffice it to say, that's not really enough.
