Question

Famed spy Boris Bajenov was convicted of charges of espionage. When he was arrested, he powered off his Windows 7 computer, so everything in memory would be lost. Yet, at trial, much of what he had been working on just prior to his arrest, was presented as evidence. That is, much of what would have been in memory and was believed to have been lost when he powered off his computer, was presented as evidence. Boris accused the prosecution of fabricating evidence, knowing this data had to have been lost. Yet the prosecution is correct in its assertion that the evidence is genuine; how is this possible?

Explanation / Answer

Volatile memory is computer storage that only maintains its data while the device is powered.the data in RAM stays there only while the computer is running; when the computer is shut off, RAM loses its data.

non-volatile memory does not lose content when power is lost. Non-volatile memory has a continuous source of power and does not need to have its memory content periodically refreshed.
