Question

Consider a home network consisting of a router, a Web server hosting your own website, and 4 different wireless devices. Suppose that all nodes on the home network are addressable/reachable by their IPs only. Answer the following:

a) How does your router get assigned its IP? What is the nature of such IP (e.g., static vs dynamic, global vs local, public vs private)?

b) How do the different wireless devices get assigned their IPs? What is the nature of such IPs?

c) Should the web server be assigned a dynamic IP or a static IP?

d) Can the web server be accessed from outside the home network (via Internet)? If yes, How?

Explanation / Answer

a.) There is an organization called 'IANA',it is responsible for the IP assignments.Blocks of IP addresses are assigned to internet registeries which are responsible for allocating within the specified geographical areas. From the regional internet registeries ,smaller blocks are assigned to the local internet registeries. Each organization must manage their own assigned blocks. It can be static in nature or it can change at times.

b.)wireless devices get assigned to their IP addresses through Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol(DHCP).The device itself broadcasts a special request for an IP address to the network. If it is a home network then all wireless devices share the same IP address.

c.)Instead of static IP address, itis better to use a dynamic IP address.Because in this a number of services are available. And this in turn updates the DNS.

d.) the servers need to be made static ,then from the router controlpage make a route til the servers ip page. Then a name must be registered to the DNS.This in turn is linked to IP.
