Question

W2A1 LEADERSHIP

Great leaders move us. They ignite our passion and inspire the best in us. When we try to explain why they are so effective, we speak of strategy, vision, or powerful ideas. However, the reality is much more primal. Great leadership works through the emotions (Goleman, Boyatzis, & McKee, 2002).

Conduct some research on leading with Emotional Intelligence or resonant leadership .

Then select a leader you know and analyze his or her emotional intelligence.   (Choose at least one competency from each area of emotional intelligence.)

Explanation / Answer

Leading with emotional intelligence

Emotional Intelligence is the ability to manage our own emotions. We should also be able to recognize and understand our emotions. Emotionally intelligent people are also able to understand and recognize the emotions of others. They are able to influence the emotions of others.

I will consider the example of Satya Nadella, the current Microsoft CEO. I think he is an emotionally intelligent leader. He is very self-aware. When he was interviewed for the post of the CEO, he was asked about being ambitious about being the CEO. He replied saying,” I don’t want to be the CEO. You want me to be the CEO.” This shows he is aware about not being ambitious. He is empathetic as two of his three children are special kids. The eldest child Zain has cerebral palsy which is congenital. He and his wife have developed the patience to take care of Zain. One of his daughters has severe learning disabilities. He has developed a support community to take care of his children. He has amazing self-management capability. He used to commute every week from Seattle to Vancouver as his wife and son were staying in Vancouver. He is good at relationship management as he is very empathetic towards his subordinates. He is a real inspiration as he has himself done so much at Microsoft as an engineer. He leads by example.

After he became the CEO of Microsoft, he has effected many changes in the organization. He did use a democratic approach in change management. He has a lot of influence on the employees of the organization. He has made a lot of cultural changes within Microsoft. Since his becoming the CEO, Microsoft has added $250 million in market capitalization. He also cajoled people to work together and not in silos. He once interrupted a senior management retreat to ask the senior executives to board a shuttle to meet some customers together.
