Scenario: Because India represents a massive marketplace, with its businesses expanding at breakneck speed, companies in the West are eager to hire Indian workers with computer skills and the ability to communicate in English. As companies are trying to keep up with the demand for employees, they are finding that many new graduates (in engineering alone, 770,000 new graduates from India's educational system join the workforce each year) are not really prepared to work. Research into Indian management practices found that India's businesses are deeply committed to employee development. Top executives named talent development, not cost cutting, as their company's highest priority for human resource management. In information technology, companies provide new hires with an average of 60 days of formal training. Even in industries with low-skill jobs, companies invest in training. Write a 2-3-page APA-style paper answering the following questions 1. What might be a reason for the strong emphasis that companies in India place upon training? 2. Using Hofstede's cultural dimensions, describe India's culture relative to the U.S. culture on three dimensions How might these differences influence each culture's view of training and development?Explanation / Answer
1. Indian workers are in demand abroad since quality manpower is available at low cost.
Companies in India place a lot of emphasis on training since some of the new graduates are not prepared enough to take on a Corporate role. This might be because quality education was not received at many colleges. Every college do not have proper infrastructure and faculty. Hence it is important for companies to train candidates and make them job ready so that they can take on challenges of a Corporate role.
2. As per Hofstede's cultural dimension India's culture comapred to US culture on 3 dimensions are as follows:
a) Indian society is an example of Collectivism while American society depicts Individualism. Indian society has strong family values while in America the family ties are loose and people can decide on their own without consideration of family.
b) Power distance Index - Indian society believes in authority and has high power index. In America power is distributed and authority is questioned which is characteristic of low power index.
c) Indulgence vs Restraint - American society allows gratification of free and natural human desires. They believe they themselves are in control of their lives while in India society and surrounding plays an important role in taking any decision.
In training and development in India one needs to be cautious of the culture and history while doing anything new while in US necessary changes needs to be brought in. In India there is lot of respect for tradition and norms while in US innovation and breaking the tradition is not seen with contempt.
