1a. Five different types of teams and their distinguishing characteristics are described below:

(i) Permanent teams – These are the teams that perform on a permanent basis and are not discontinued or dissolved once the task at hand is completed and the underlying goal is accomplished. For example the accounting and finance department within an organization is a permanent team.

(ii) Temporary teams – This is the opposite of permanent teams and such teams are dissolved and discontinued once the task at hand is completed and the underlying goal is accomplished.

(iii) Task force – These teams are formed only for a special task or a special purpose. These teams are usually formed for a specific project where the problem at hand is critical in nature.

(iv) Self managed teams – Such teams consist of team members who come together to work for a common purpose. The distinguishing feature of such teams is that team members work without the supervision of any leader.

(v) Cross functional teams – In such a team members come from different departments to work for a common cause and purpose. For instance for a sales projection exercise a cross functional team is formed in which a member from operations and a member from marketing department is included.

1b. Team characteristics includes the following elements –

(i) clear goals – there is a clarity of goals, vision and objectives. This helps the team members to understand where the team is headed.

(ii) Open and clear communication – This is one of the most important features of a team. Open, clear and effective communication is vital for keeping the team and its members well informed as well as focused.

(iii) Defined roles – Roles are defined and job functions are provided for each team members. Members are allotted task roles and maintenance roles.

(iv) Participative leadership – Usually leadership is shared among team members as per the requirement of the circumstances.
