(In 2005) HRSD (Hampton Roads Sanitation District) was implementing an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) System using Oracle software. The implementation included the replacement of past homegrown system with an Oracle’s ERP system (eBusiness Suite) for all opeatiation activities.

The project included integration of operational, financial and other corporate functions into a single system and standardization of business practices. The ERP system had very different data structure and processes compared to the legacy system. The Commission were in the process of deciding the conversion plans. As a ERP consultant, provide your recomendation of the conversion plans with justification. You may suggest several plans --- provide pros and cons for each plan and rank them.

Data in legacy systems is stored in various file formats such as Excel files, flat files, and databases. A good approach to data conversion would be to take all that data into a staging area. Here, we cleanse, transform, and validate the data. Thereafter, you need to reconcile the data ensure no data is unaccounted for.

Organize work out sessions between legacy system owners, consulting vendor team and the data owners to ensure that everyone is in sync.

Clean the data. Remove special characters, junk characters, similar looking names of customers, suppliers, employees, buyers etc.

Identify the inter-dependency of data and accordingly plan the sequence of conversion.

Test the conversion run at least twice and validate the data correctness, completeness, consistency and validity as these simulations will bring out potential issues which can ironed out for the final data conversion run to production system.
