Computer design and digital logic
Purpose: Demonstrate the ability to understand microarchitecture, datapath, and control signals in a
single cycle, multi cycle and pipelined processor.
1.) (20 POINTS) Think of your everyday activities that are associated with temporal or spatial
locality.
1.A.) (10 POINTS) Give an example of one everyday activity that is associated with temporal
locality. Please explain how this activity exhibits temporal locality.
1.B.) (10 POINTS) Give an example of one everyday activity that is associated with spatial
locality. Please explain how this activity exhibits spatial locality.
Explanation / Answer
(20 POINTS) Think of your everyday activities that are associated with temporal or spatial
locality.
Temporal locality is the same location will be referenced again in the near future. There is a temporal proximity between the adjacent references to the same memory location. it is common to make efforts to store a copy of the referenced data in special memory storage, which can be accessed faster. Temporal locality is a special case of spatial locality the prospective location is identical to the present location.
Spatial locality is referenced at a particular time, then it is likely that nearby memory locations will be referenced in the near future. In this case it is common to attempt to guess the size and shape of the area around the current reference for which it is worthwhile to prepare faster access.
Good temporal locality is cache miss traffic decreases fast when cache size increases
Good spatial locality is cache miss traffic does not increase much when line size increases
1.A.) (10 POINTS) Give an example of one everyday activity that is associated with temporal
locality. Please explain how this activity exhibits temporal locality.
Temporal locality: (1) making phone calls, if we called someone recently, we are likely to call them again soon. (2) using a textbook, if we used a textbook recently, we will likely use it again soon.
1.B.) (10 POINTS) Give an example of one everyday activity that is associated with spatial
locality. Please explain how this activity exhibits spatial locality.
Spatial locality: (1) reading a magazine if we looked at one page of the magazine, we are likely to look at next page soon. (2) walking to locations on campus - if a student is visiting a professor in the engineering department, she or he is likely to visit another professor in the engineering department soon.
