Question
-Trace and explain how the hardware of a computer organizes and stores information for later retrieval from an active file being processed in the processor chip to a mass storage device (hard disk or removable storage). What is the trend in terms of speed in this progression of components? What is the trend in terms of size and capacity in this progression of components?
-Describe in broad terms how the software of a computer organizes information for storage and later retrieval. Does this process yield any potential locations for latent digital evidence? Is latent evidence always intact? Why or why not?
-What advantages are offered by commercial forensic packages? Are there any disadvantages to using them? If so, what are they?
Explanation / Answer
Answer)
1) As we all know that the hard disk reads and writes the data's to a magnetic pattern which is on a spinning metal disk for the storage of bits. And we also have the flash memory which doesn't have the moving parts but has the silicon chip to store the bits. Both the ways the storage is persistent. The flash memory's data's are faster to be retrieved and consumes less power than that of a hard disk.
To enhance the speed, the use of cache, front side bus plays a vital role.
The developments made on the computers have brought the information management services to a new era. With the help of central processing and the use of cache and also information centers which provides access to the world of information has made the impossible possible today.
The speed of progression of the components is high as from vacuum tubes to transistors and then to integrated circuits and silicon chips have not only made a progression with the infrastructure but with the improved refinement, memory capacity, computational speed, I/O Time and efficiency. Sharing of information, multiprogramming, interactive working has turned out to be faster than before.
The introduction of microprocessor and micro computers were the new and sophisticated developments for text processing, database management and other tasks.
The storage, organization and retrieval with respect to the software happens due to the database linkage. We also have a ISRS (Information storage and retrieval system) which is a network associated with a build in interface or user based interface. But ISRS needs internet access and is public whereas DBMS is with access privileges and centralized management.
With the help of database associated with the software and applications the digital evidence can be traced. But security measures are taken care of to prevent any sort of malicious activities.
The advantages are they help with fetching and accumulating the informations with any change in the data. These investigators use the imaging on a disk so as to avoid altering the evidences. The deleted data’s recovery is possible.
The disadvantage is its high cost. The logging being another disadvantage which points out on who logged into.
Hope this answer helps. :) Happy to help.
