The new space is a real change from what the programmers Martin leaves everyone where they are. He a big open room with one wall of floor-to-ceiling windows. Their desks all faced each other, which allowed them to easily talk and collabcrate with one ancther. The new office space has a row of five cubicles along a wall in a long, narrow room. hasn't told them, but he purposely put between Rosa and Kris in order to discourage their constant chatting, which he viewed as a time-wasting activity. Martin also felt like the larger cube was better for Bradley because which is slightly larger than the others, is tucked nto a windowless corner, The cubicle walls are 6 feet tall, and when they are at their desks working, has more computer equipment than the other programmers The team leader, Martin, assigned the cubicles that each programmer has moved into. He put himself in the first cubicle with Rosa, Sanjay, During the next two months, the web programming department starts to experience a lot of tension. Sanjay seems to be in a bad mood on a daily basis. When Rosa and Kris start chatting with each other over the cubicles, and Kris in the next three cubicles with windows. he asks them loudly, "Will you please just Bradley was given the larger cubicle in the corner work and stop shouting to each other?" or says sarcastically, "I'm trying to work here!" Because he and Martin work very closely on a number of projects, Bradley feels he should be in the cubicle next to Martin, rather than the one Bradley stays in his corner cubicle and avoids talking to the other programmers. He believes that Martin perceives is the worst cubicle but doesn't know purposely gave him what Bradley what he did to deserve being treated this way. He s resentful of the other staff members who have Sanjay is also upset. He is in the middle cubicle with Rose and Kris on either side of him. Rosa windows in their cubicles and feels like Martin must think more highly of Rosa, Kris, and SanjayExplanation / Answer
1) The conflict between the programmers has raised due to new office space. The new space was being uncomfortable for the team members for some or the other reason. The team members started disliking each other due to unsuitable office space.
Martin being a team leader has a choice of office space for the rest of the members in his team. By allocating the space to the programmers, he is not only disliked by them, but it is even causing a long term trouble effecting their performances. Because, none of the team members like the space alloted to them
Bradley felt that Martin is giving him less importance when compared to the importance that is being given to Rosa, Kris and Sanjay. He felt so, because Martin didnot provide him space with a window. He also feels he needs to get space next to martin due to common projects. Sanjay being positioned in the middle of the cubicle is constantly being distracted because, Kris and Rose are constantly chatting or shouting on each other. This situation is making programmers to communicate less, conflict more and perform less.
2) Yes, this is definitely a relational conflict. Issues of esteem, control and affiliation. When the esteem needs are not met, we experience relational conflict. Bradley wants a window and he did not get one.
Control issues are very common on inter-personal conflicts. Both Kris and Rose have interpersonal conflicts, and Sanjay has interpersonal conflict with Kris and Rose. Martin is witnessing affliation issues with Bradley and vice-versa.
3) Fisher and Ury approach focuses on few basic elements of negotiation - people, interests, options and criteria.
Principle 1 is People : Seperate the people from the problem. In order to seperate people from the problem, Martin has to know what is their problem with their existing seating position and what are their preferred first and second options. Based on that, Martin should promise the team that he would offer them best and preferred option.
4) The Thomas Kilmann model identifies five conflict styles. A person's individual style is usually a combination of these five different styles. They are - Avoidance style, Competition style, Accomodation style, Compromise style, Collaboration style
5) Fractionation is breaking large conflicts into small conflicts and resolving small conflicts that help individuals to know that the conflicts are not as huge mass of worries but are specific and defined. So, the first thing that Martin should do is to give clarity to the specific problems of his team members.
Smaller conflict adds helps to lessen emotional weight. In the process of reducing the weight of the conflict the members will be willing to work with each other by solving issues. Face saving, is a way of reducing the conflict by presenting the team members views of their personalities and deflecting their focus in the conflict.
Face saving is a communicative approach which can be implemented to help save their image within the individuals. It also serves to protecting member's reputation by the leader. This is a good way as the individuals tend to contribute to their own image of how team members see.
