Question
4. Milwaukee Paper Manufacturing, Inc., located near downtown Milwaukee, has long tried to avoid the expense of installing air pollution control equipment in its plant. Recently, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has given him 16 weeks to install a complex system to filter the air. Milwaukee Paper received the warning that it will have to close its factory unless it installs a complex system to filter the air Joni Steinberg, administrator of the plant, wants to make sure that the installation of the filtration system goes smoothly and ends on time. Milwaukee Paper has identified the eight activities that must be completed to complete the project with the time required for each activity in weeks. These appear in the table below Immediate Predecessor Time Description Build the internal components for the device make the necessary modifications in floors and ceilings construction of the collection pile emptying the concrete floor and installing the frame construction of the high temperature furnace installation of pollution control system installed of the device for contaminated air inspect and test the system 4 a. What is the impact on the sequence of activities if EPA approval is required after Inspection and testing? b. lustrate this project in a network diagram. How long does it take to complete this project? c. Suppose that Milwaukee Paper Manufacturing, Inc. has only 13 weeks (instead of 16) to install the new pollution control equipment or face a court order of closure. Determine which activities should be accelerated and by how much to meet the 13-week deadline using the data provided in Table 1. Table 1. Normal and Acceleration Times and Costs for the Milwaukee Paper Manufacturing, Inc. Time (weeks) Costs ($) Activity Normal Accelerated Normal 22,000 30,000 26,000 48,000 56,000 30,000 Accelerated 22,750 34,000 27,000 49,000 58,000 30,500Explanation / Answer
The list of activities, preceeding activities and durations given in the question are used as follows to find the critical path and minimum duration to complete the project.
For accelerating the project, choice is between A, C, and E
As A has minimum cost $750 so crash A by 1 week that reduce the duration of roject to 14 weeks
Now B and D are also critical as B--D--G--H is also critical path
Now crash C from the earlier path and D from the new critical path by 1 week each with cost of $1,000 each.
Therefore project can be completed in 13 weeks by accelerating A, C, D by one week each at cost of $2,750.
