Explanation / Answer

APPLICATION LAYER:

function : specifies the shared communication protocols and interface methods used by hosts in a communications network . The main protocols used are http ,https dns , ftp , tftp, SMTP, TELNET , BOOTP etc.

SESSION LAYER

FUNCTION: this layer main respnsibility is to control dialog( either full duplex or half-duplex operation ) and manage sessions between end-user application processes. It also  provides synchronization points in the stream of exchanged messages.

PROTOCOLS:

PPTP, Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol

RPC, Remote Procedure Call Protocol

L2F, Layer 2 Forwarding Protocol

L2TP, Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol

PAP, Password Authentication Protocol

TRANSPORT LAYER: functions

it manages flow control , error control in WAN. other tasks includes segmentation and congestion policies.

protocols:

TCP Transmission control protocol

Datagram Congestion Control Protocol (DCCP)

Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP).

NETWORK LAYER:

major functions :

IP addressing , fragmentation , Traffic shaping and manages the routing algorithms.

major protocols: IP, IPX.

DATA LINK LAYER:

major functions :{ flow control , error control} (within LAN), access control and framing .

major protocol : Ethernet protocols.

PHYSICAL LAYER:

this layer deals with the physical mainly the electrical properties of the cable .

major protocol : ethernet
