Question

Explain and show work please

Company ABC that trades stocks as part of its business has two locations: one in NYC and one in Chicago. These two locations are connected using a WAN link with a transmission rate of 6 Mbps. Refer to the network diagram provided with the quiz. A business critical stock application, (Stock Streamer), runs on a server connected to the LAN at the NYC office. The trader employees use the Stock Streamer application during business hours and this application uses 2 Mbps of bandwidth for each trader while it is running. Initially, (as depicted in the diagram), there are (2) traders in NYC and (2) in Chicago. Due to business growth the CEO hires (3) more traders in both NYC and Chicago. Dave is the IT support staff member that sits in NYC right next to the traders. On the very first day the additional traders start using the Stock Streamer application the traders in NYC complain to Dave that the application is running real slow. Keep in mind that all PC's connect to the LAN at 100 Mbps. Dave runs down to the server room and discovers that the server has a network connection that supports 10 Mbps/100 Mbps or 1000 Mbps and it is set on 10 Mbps. He quickly changes the server to use 1000 Mbps. He goes back upstairs and thinks he has solved the performance problem because the traders in NYC tell him that everything is running fast again. For the network bottleneck, compute the minimum amount of bandwidth increase that is required to resolve the bottleneck. Chicago NYC Stock Streamer App 100 10Mbps 6 Mbps 100 100 Mbps 100

Explanation / Answer

First of all the important thing to understand is not to confuse the bandwidth with the throughput of the network. Although it is believed that high bandwidth network are generally fast but that is not the case always. Throughput of the network really depends in the types of applications that are being used on the network.

So, in the case provided above, just setting the network to 100 Mbps won't solve the bottleneck issue, rather a further detailed analysis should be done to understrand the actual requirements over the network.

So we will look in to the solution in two steps, first we will see the bandwidth available and that is 1000 Mbps.

Secondly, we will understand the specific utilization by the application on the network.

Now there are 5 traders i n NYC office which directly uses the Server APP and each trader needs 2 Mbps bandwidth on the server and is connected to 100 Mbps with LAN, i.e. 5*2+5*100 = 510 Mbps.

Similarly, for the Chicago office, they can only sent the data over a 6 Mbps line.

So, the total requirements calculates to 516Mbps bandwidth for the network to work efficiently.
