Explain a Broadcast transmission, illustrate with one advantage and one disadvantage of a broadcast transmission. 2. Write short notes on two different ways of extending a Local Area Network. 3. Explain briefly one technology used to implement a long distance communication 4. Explain the concept of Dijkstra least-cost algorithm used in routing.Explanation / Answer
1. Basically, communication is of two types-:
So in broadcasting transmission, a single channel is shared by all the devices/machines on the network. Since in broadcasting packets move to all the devices or nodes so it may need to get refreshed at certain points. The broadcast is one-to-all technology which allows all the nodes to receive a common message this sometimes reduces the cost of transmission at the sender's end and on the receivers end the picture quality is very good. This one of the biggest advantage of broadcasting transmission.
In the case of the internet, broadcasting is not a good mode of transmission because everybody receives the signals which can be unwanted at times and this can cause unwanted data usage. Some examples where broadcasting transmission is Television, Radio, Live telecast etc.
2. There are various ways to expand the local area network but Here is explained two of the most basic ways of expanding LAN.
a) Wired Expansion- So in this wires are used to connect different network devices using different topologies. Two most common wires used are optical cables and copper wires. Optical cables are used for fast communication but they are very costly. On the other hand, copper wires are cheap but they come with low speeds of transmission. So when the distance is more than say 100 meters optical wires are used to compensate for higher transmission speed but for distances, less than 100 meters copper wires are used to compensate for the cost. Different topologies may include Star topology, Ring topology etc.
b) Wireless Expansion- So in wireless expansion wireless communication is used to connect two or more devices. Gateways can be used to expand for even a wider LAN. A bridge network can be used to connect a wired ethernet connection to a wireless connection. Wireless connections are though more feasible today due to increasing costs due to cables. And they provide even higher speeds of transmission than copper cables. Expansion of LAN using wireless connection examples are- Wifi, WiMAX etc.
3. long-distance communication-: There are many technologies present which serve the purpose of long-distance communication. Technologies like wifi, WiMAX, satellite communication we are using in our day to day lives. So here I have mentioned yet another important mode of long-distance communication.
Satellite Communication: This is the mode of communication which keeps the world connected. Satellite communication is one of the most versatile modes of communication. The live telecast we say sitting in our home is only due to satellite communication. This mode of communication allows very high-speed data transmission. Satellite phones are also available which giver A very wide coverage of seas and oceans but it comes at a very high cost.
4. Routing problems are solved using two shortest-distance algorithms, One of them is Dijkstra's algorithm. This is an iterative algorithm.
So it has various iterations by which it finds out the most cost-effective distance.
