Explanation / Answer

In 2004, PlentyOfFish became a full-time business for FrindHe ran the site independently until 2008, when he began hiring other employees at his new Vancouver headquarters. In 2009, PlentyOfFish also launched a contest with Lady Gaga allowing single members to go together and meet the singer during The Fame Ball Tour.

The website for PlentyOfFish appeared in several music videos in 2010: in Lady Gaga's "Telephone", Natasha Bedingfield's "Touch", Ke$ha's "We R Who We R", Flo Rida and Akon's "Available", Jason Derulo's "Ridin' Solo", and 3OH!3's "Double Vision". In 2011, it appeared in Britney Spears's music video for "Hold It Against Me". Many of these appearances are undisclosed paid product placementswhich have met with highly negative reviews.

In 2010, PlentyOfFish launched mobile apps for iPhone and Android. But now it is also available in iPad, and Windows phone.] As of May 2013, about 70% of PlentyOfFish's logins come from mobile devices. In a June 2014 interview, Frind edited this number and now attributes 85% of all PlentyOfFish traffic to mobile with the number growing weekly.

On January 21, 2011, it was discovered that the PlentyOfFish website had been hacked which exposed the personal and password information on nearly 30 million user accounts. Since the alleged hacking incident, Frind alleges he has identified persons he believes are responsible for the hacking, and alleges he is threatening legal action in response to the widespread negative media exposure. At the time this received global media exposure and security experts blamed PlentyOfFish for the security and privacy lapse specifically for keeping users' passwords unsecured.

On February 28, 2012, the parents of US Army Lieutenant Peter Burks sued PlentyOfFish. The parents' lawsuit alleges photos of their son, who was killed in Iraq in 2007, were used without permission. The parents were seeking compensatory and punitive damages.

In an August 2012 interview, Markus Frind stated that based on the millions of relationships and marriages PlentyOfFish has created over the past several years, it is estimated that over one million babies have been born as a result of the website.

On May 20, 2013, Frind implemented several changes to the website with the stated goal of focusing on "meaningful relationships." Among these changes were the removal of the "intimate encounters" option.A related feature that was eliminated was the option to contact clients of age differences greater than "Markus," presumably Frind, found tasteful. Although the PlentyOfFish site and its "matching" criteria continue to match couples with age differences greater than the 14 year guideline, attempts to contact the "matches" resulted in an inbox message from Markus stating, among other things, "[t]here is no reason for a 50 year old man to contact a 18 year old woman."Another implementation included with the changes is no longer allowing male users to attach images to messages.

On March 25, 2015, Plentyoffish Media Inc. paid $48,000 as part of an undertaking for an alleged violation of Canada's Anti-Spam Law (CASL). It was the second company in Canada to be punished by the CRTC under the enforcement of this legislation.

On July 14, 2015, PlentyOfFish was sold for $575 million to The Match Group (owner of Match.com, OKCupid and Tinder).

Dating website Plenty Of Fish (POF) has announced a radical rule shake-up to stop 'sleazy' men harassing female members for sex, and to reduce the number of men pretending to be women in order to have 'horny' conversations with other men.

The free membership site's Canadian founder Markus Frind messaged users to explain the changes - which include removing the Intimate Encounters option - and outlining that the measures are being imposed in order for the service to focus more keenly on creating 'meaningful relationships'.

POF - which has 55 million members worldwide, 3.3m daily users and an annual turnover of £6.6m - has also imposed a ban on contacting anyone with whom the age gap is 14 years or more.

Everyday, tens of thousands of new users sign up for Plentyoffish.com - one of the only completely free online dating sites. Since the site's inception in 2003, an even higher number of users have found success, marrying matches made via the website. Founder Markus Frind estimates that based on the number of marriages that have resulted in these matches, over one million babies have been born as a result of his website.

So how did Frind's website - which has always been free - emerge as not just one of the most successful dating websites, but also such a successful company for Frind? As he explained during the GROW 2012 conference in Vancouver, B.C.,Frind quickly found ways to monetize Plentyoffish from the very beginning, initially utilizing Google's AdSense to profit from Plentyoffish users. He also leveraged the power of affiliate networks to make money from those browsing Plentyoffish.

Though this method of monetization didn't help Frind strike it rich very quickly - he never took VC funding to "make money" - he famously blogged in 2006 about how he had leveraged AdSense with Plentyoffish to make over $900,000 in one month - which is not too shabby for what was, at the time, a company of just one person competing against the likes of Match.com and eHarmony.

But now Plentyoffish is seeing a tremendous growth in mobile use - just last week, mobile use of Plentoffish increased 8%, according to a statement made by Frind at GROW. But Plentyoffish currently lacks a mobile monetization strategy, primarily because the company is focused on users, not on how it will make money off of them. As Frind explained, "Our product is not the website. Our product is the users, because every user affects every other user's experience. When someone sends a message on a mobile device, someone on the website - or another mobile device - has to respond." Of course, Frind doesn't need to worry about a mobile monetization strategy yet, as his proven success online has bought him plenty of time to plan.

When asked if Frind would recommend to other entrepreneurs that they pursue a similar monetization strategy to achieve a success similar to Plentyoffish, he said "absolutely. [Google AdSense is] the quickest and easiest - it will take you five minutes to set up. Everything else will take you way longer with far more effort." He added that this way, "you can tell really quickly how much money you will make and how will profitable the business can be." He also warned other entrepreneurs against waiting for users before putting up ads or finding ways to monetize.

And while it's one thing to make money from your website, Frind has always differentiated this from monetizing users - which is what has ultimately set Plentyoffish apart from the competition and made it one of the most successful dating sites online.
