Question

Section 1

Answer 1) The strengths that I possess is that I am a good listener. This way people open up to me and discuss their problems with me and by unloading their feelings they can feel relaxed and lighter. Since, I am a good listener it helps me in being sympathetic as well as I try to understand the pain of the other person and try to placate them.

For being a competent leader in a nonprofit organization one has to be strong willed and resourceful and be open for conversations. Strong willed and resourceful as funds will have to be generated from other sources since it is a nonprofit venture. If I am a good conversationalist and a people’s person, I will know what to talk about so that the work gets done.

Answer 2) Volatility of emotion is a weakness. Being in a state of extreme joy, anger or sadness are really not the correct time to make any kind of decisions.

Answer 3) For relationship building one has to break the ice with the workers so during lunch breaks I make it a point to sit with them and share food or just talk which helps them to open up with me and they are comfortable sharing things with me.

Answer 4) For conflict resolution it is very important to talk the matter out face to face. In the name of keeping things official people rely too much on email. This leads to distrust. For instance, I work for an organization which runs 24*7. Now, during festivals everyone wants leave. At that time instead of denying leaves and creating a conflict I step up and say that I will cover shift and then someone can come to work later after celebrating so that I can go and spend time with family and friends. This way people feel that since I am sacrificing they should too.

Section 2

Answer 2) Leadership always plays a key role in any organization and mine is no different. I had come across a Manager who never stuck up for his team. Would yell at them and did not feel for them or vouch for them. It made his team members miserable and on the verge of quitting. He was a prime example of a bad manager. However, after sometime he got transferred and this same team got a compassionate manager who stood up for his team and vouched for them and got them raises by standing up for his team in front of the CEO which earned him tremendous trust and loyalty from the team members.

Section 3

Answer 1) My philosophy about leadership is to be a people’s person. In my current role also I have seen that if I give stress on talking to the individual and look at finding the result rather than dwelling on the problem it is easier to get a solution and the individual also is happier in discussing the issue. Hence, being a people’s person helps and this philosophy keeps on getting revalidated.
