Question

In a present scenario, approximately 100000 commercial flights take off and land every day, transporting around a million passengers and 16Bn USD worth goods. 3.7Bn passengers travel every year and are expected to be increased by double in next 15-20 years. The topmost priority of the global aviation sector is safety and security. The terrorist threat is most prominent in this present scenario. The new danger of foreign terrorist fighters. And the worst part is that aviation sector is always targeted.

Terrorist attacks are the man-made disaster which comes under security and need to deal on different fronts. But the safety of aircraft is on most priority because one accident in aviation sector cost a lot to all stakeholders. As per available data from IATA, industry’s lowest jet hull loss was 0.23 in 2014, which was lowest from 2010. In the 2015-16 it was 0.31 and the previous spiking observed in 2013 which was 0.41. Last year within IATA airline members had highest jet hull loss of 0.46 that of the industry. This represents a loss of 4 aircrafts, but there was not a single fatality. (IATA Member comprise 260 airlines and have market share of 83% of global transport)

The major safety issue at current stage is a great difference in safety at different regions, the tracking mechanism, and pilot’s mental and emotional health. Further to this are unmanned air vehicles or drones & cabin inside safety. During the period of 2010-14, the jet hull loss rate for different regions are as follows-

North Asia- 0.06; Sub-Saharan Africa- 3.94; North America- 0.13, Europe – 0.18; Asia-Pacific -0.54; Latin America & Caribbean- 0.91; Middle East- North Africa- 0.99; CIS Countries- 2.71.

In terms of overall accidents during 2010-14-

North Asia- 0.80; Sub-Saharan Africa-11.64; North America- 1.34, Europe – 1.88; Asia-Pacific -2.65; Latin America & Caribbean- 3.61; Middle East- North Africa- 4.11; CIS Countries- 5.68.

The disappearance of MH370 in 2014, brought aircraft tracking in top agenda of the sector. This incidence resulted in Normal Aircraft Tracking Implementation initiative (NATII) during the ICAO’s safety conference.
