Facts are defined as things that are known to be true. This mean they have been proved and cannot be denied. On the other hand, idea or concept is a thought about a certain thing. For students, it is important to have a grasp on both the facts as well as the idea and concepts behind them. However, it is the ideas or concepts that can help one strive to prove something as a fact. Let’s take an example; there is gravity on Earth. This is a fact. However, this could only be proved after Sir Isaac Newton proved this concept scientifically to turn it into a fact. When the apple fell from the tree Sir Isaac immediately had a thought. The question that struck him was that why did the apple fall down and did not go up towards the sky. This led him to the idea that there is some force which pulled it down. His proved to the world the concept of gravity which has now become a known fact. However, without the idea or the concept it would not have been possible for him to realize and prove his fact. Another example is it’s a fact that the Sun is hot. Its temperature is so high that no mankind can with stand it. Now to make a student realize how hot the Sun is, you don’t need to send them to the Sun. But if the student has an idea of how it feels to touch a hot plate, one can easily relate to the concept of heat and explain him/her the fact. If the student does not know what it is like to touch a 100 degrees temperature hot plate, he would not be able to comprehend what it is like at the Sun with 10,000 degrees temperature, even though it is a fact.

To conclude, it is important to know the facts but knowing the ideas and concepts can open up the imagination, creativity and comprehension skills of the students to accept the fact and even think beyond it.
