5. Read the two references to ATM LAN Emulation (LANE), in the "Further Reading" section. Describe the complexity in this solution from within the complexity model; where are state and interaction surfaces added, and what sort of optimization is being gained with each addition? Do you think the ATM LANE solution presents a good set of tradeoffs for providing the kinds of ser-VIces it is designed to offer versus something like a shared Ethernet network?

Explanation / Answer

Question 1

The complexity which is faced by the solution are as follows

a.LAN Emulation cannot support the existing MAC-layer protocol.

b.LAN Emulation cannot fill the gap between non similar technologies

c.LAN Emulation cannot solve the monitoring problem when it is moved other shaped network (like the start shaped network)

Question 2

If we check the total structure of the LAN emulation model

First comes the Application.

Second comes the TCP, UDP, TP4

Third comes the IP, CLNS, IPX

Fourth comes the Ethernet S/W, Token Ring S/W

Fifth comes the ATM LAN Emulation

Sixth comes the Twisted Pair, Coax, Fiber, STP

Providing the current architecture it gives the proper functionality of the main component of the LAN emulation model. They are LAN Emulation Client (LEC) it is responsible for providing the LAN emulation services to the user. Second comes the LAN Emulation Services (LES) it is responsible for the address to be in the respective MAC and ATM address. Third comes the LAN Emulation Configuration Server (LECS) it is responsible for calculating the maximum frame size and also sharing the configuration information. Fourth comes the BUS it is responsible for all the transmissions and multicasts.

Question 3

Yeah the ATM LANE solution presents a good set of tradeoffs for providing the kinds of services it is designed to offer versus something like a shared Ethernet network. This is because

a.LANE is much more flexible.

b.LANE provides smoother data transmission’s it uses various protocols for securing the transfer.

c.One of the important feature of LAN Emulation is the fault tolerance. In case of any network issue or disconnectivity it recovers the client status from the break point.
