Question
The article “Leadership is a conversation” talks about how with changes brought about by factors like globalization, use of new and advanced technologies and change in organizational structures and business models are making the command and control approach to management less relevant with each passing day. Leadership today has to be more open, more engaging, and more interactive and inclusive. For this leaders will have to focus on how they communicate within the organization. Leaders will do well by focusing on person-to-person communication and by instilling conversational sensibility within the organization.
Leaders in today’s world should focus on establishing a mental as well as emotional proximity with their employees. This will help them in gaining trust as well as loyalty of their employees in the long run. Secondly leaders should keep their ears open and be good listeners. Being an excellent orator alone is not a part of the communication skills of a leader. A leader is also required to be a good listener and a leader should be able to hear the problems and issues of employees and help them find solutions effectively. Leadership should also be inclusive and should focus on expanding the role of the employees within the organization. This will keep their morale and their motivational level high.
I will implement the above points and hone my skills and apply my leadership qualities keeping in mind the focus areas pointed above. When I get into the real world and start working in an organization I will always keep in mind, in my capacity as a leader, to avoid a command and control approach. What I would do as a leader is to find ways to engage with my co-workers and employees. I would focus on my communication to make my conversations with my employees effective, straightforward and authentic. I will have to be humble and curious in my conversations and get past monologues to make the conversations with my co-workers and employees more interactive. Lastly the focus will be on pursuing an agenda. Conversations will be used to develop clarity of purpose and clearly explaining the vision and strategy of the organization.
