Question

Algorithms are at the heart of computer programs that impact our lives every day. The article How Algorithms Rule the World provides examples of algorithms that predict crime hot spots, parents-to-be, and hit pop records. Discuss one of the algorithms mentioned (or another that you have read about, providing a link to the source article), and explain why you find it compelling. How might different types of information or data, or a different application, change the algorithm’s results, for better or worse?

Explanation / Answer

I recently read about an algorithm which uses AI to find out which desease a person has, depending upon the symptoms of the person. This algorithm also makes use of the patient's history of diseases and the family history to make better suggestions. Such an algorithm can help doctors to identify the disease a person has and to rule out some other suspect diseases. For example, a very physically active person with no family history of diabetes is very unlikely to have it even though he may be at a low blood sugar. Such algorithms can help doctors to gain insight into the patient's conditions which might have been missed by them.

Some suggestions from my side to make this algorithm better is to also take the geographical location of the person and the weather of that place into account. This is because different diseases have different rates of occurrences in different parts of the world, and also that these rates change with changing weather. Such knowledge could help make a lot more efficient suggestions.
