Explanation / Answer

1.) Comment on the results from Freiburg and Munich attempts at migration.

Freiburg wanted to reduce the cost involved in Microsoft Office. It was costing them $75 per seat per year, they wanted to migrate it to Open Office. But, the migration was not successful for many reasons.

At last, they forced to migrate it back to Microsoft due to this issues costing $360.

Munich's migration was successful due to it's well planning and execution.
It saved $13 million in cost. The cost reduction was successful.

2.) Summarize the outcomes, why you think the migrations worked or failed.

Freiburg
a. Lack of migration training
b. They were using Windows Desktop
c. Few did not take up in Migration
d. Incompatibility of documents since both the software were in use

Munich
a. They fully migrated to Linux Systems for OpenOffice.org
b. The support team was there to help them.
c. Investment in IT, Technology and user-community.
d. The software was up-to-date
e. Training

3.) Finally, provide your opinion of either keeping MS Office or migrating to another suite

Most of our systems are in Windows OS. Staffs used to work in Windows OS. Migrating them suddenly to different OS and software might not be easy for them to take up unless until proper training is provided on new tools. MS Office is a paid software, but it has widely supported community. But it is not open source. The open source software can be used provided proper training and a good community of users to support that.

4.) Describe the pros and cons of paying for a support contract for something like Microsoft Office vs using free software that is supported by the open-source community.

Pros MS Office Support Team:
-> Resolution at fast.
-> The Root cause can be found easily and avoid business trouble due to software issues.

Cons:
-> Costly
-> Different types of support contracts and would differ in price

Pros of Open Source
-> Cost Reduction
-> Can be used by anyone since it is open source
-> No need to pay for support provided if the community is wide and good enough.

Cons
-> Will be dependent on open source community members for support and resolution.
-> If the community is not large, it would delay in resolution and might affect business
