Question
In Unit 1, we are introduced to the concepts of operating systems and the basic organization of the textbook.
For your Discussion Assignment:
Using one of the referenced website articles discuss how operating systems use a general technique called virtualization and virtual machines. The operating system takes a physical resource (such as the processor, or memory, or a disk) and transforms it into a more general, powerful, and easy-to-use virtual form of itself called a virtual machine (VM).
You must post your initial response (with references).
Explanation / Answer
Virtual Machine, as the name suggest is the concept of sharing the physical resource (like Main Memory, Processor, Secondary Memory etc.) in such a way that it creates an independent system which being fully functional, lets the other software/OS use that memory.
Let me explain with an example, Suppose you own a Duplex (A physical system). You live in it and use it's complete functionality. Now, you rent your upper part of the Duplex to someone else, who is not permanent (Can change the property, location or resources anytime). He/She will be having access to a portion of your House resources. But in a restricted way. He/She might should be inside the house by 10:00P.M. else you will lock the door.
And so, these kind of restrictions follows with the virtual memory also. It has a portion of resources available with it but with certail restriction. Though the enviornment for that virtual memory is going to be completely identical with the original system, but it has only portion of resources available with restrictions.
