What type of internal organizational structure is currently implemented within the organization? How does this structure impede or promote innovation?
My organisation has a Horizontal and a lateral reporting structure : In this form of an organisational structure. employees do not report to one particular leader but two or more leaders who over see a project and its integrity and implementation. This way the employee executing a project always has the freedom to approach any manager and the project isn't under the mercy of one individual.
This structure promotes innovation by removing micro management from the equation and used motivational techniques and the right hiring and training practices in order to promote innovation. This form of an organisational structure also allows employees to contribute to every level of the organisation and not just their assigned department. This way the organisation can source feedback from the grass root levels of the organisation from a larger sample size. hence promoting more innovation.
What type of internal organizational structure did you choose to create for the organization?
I choose an organisational structure that sources internal as well as third party talent in order to execute a project. This is known as Open Innovation organisational structure.
Why is this the best option to support innovation within the organization?
Innovation can be product of ideas within or outside the firm. Traditionally large multinational companies, health care services and Banks used internal technologies and ideas to drive the innovation within the company. Open innovation involves using a combination of internal and external ideas, technology, business processes and functions in order to drive innovation within the organisation. When entrepreneurs and established firms adapt open innovation it'll help them accelerate the rate and the quality of innovation. The other factor is the clear cost benefit in developing new products and services vs sourcing them from outside the firm. Using a combination of internal and external will result in a quality and quantity of innovation which is optimum for the organisation.
