LR(4/8): (5 pts.) Describe the pros and cons of paying for a support contract for something like Microsoft Office vs using free software that is supported by the open-source community.

Explanation / Answer

Question 1

The result from Freiburg and Munich attempts at migration was a disaster. Almost five years was wasted along with a huge amount of $600000 was spent and which resulted on many unhappy customers.

Question 2

The migrations failed for them. First and foremost reason for the failure was there was no proper planning. If we go in depth we can see that their main focus was to go for the cost cutting. Without any technical discussion they switched which led the employees to difficulty as there was an issue with the incapability. If we look closely into the expense then we can see that it was mostly dominated by the idea of cost cutting.

Question 3

My opinion would be keeping MS office. This is because office itself is a big end to end software. Having a licensed version enables you a full vendor support from the Microsoft. And also all types of files are supported by it and there will be no compatibility issue. Even if a new modification is coming into the market then it will be easily implemented. So overall work process is much simpler. The main TRP for using Microsoft Office is that the UI is very much user friendly.

Question 4

The Pros for having Microsoft is that

a.Supporting all format of the documents

b.Simpler UI

c.Easy Upgradation

The Cons for having Microsoft is that

a.The cost for license can be high compared to others.

The Pros for having free software that is supported by the open-source community

a.It is free no money is required for licensing.

b.Supports majority of the documents format

The Cons for having free software that is supported by the open-source community

a.Functionality issue may be there.

b.Old document type might not be supported by the open source software.
