Question
Its happens quite often, a computer associates to a wireless network or plugs into a network. You are expecting to connect to the Internet but you are not able to. You do some investigating and realize that you have a 169.254.1.10 address with a 255.255.0.0 subnet mask. Answer the following questions in a post: What is this address? What is it called and how is it assigned? What are some possible reasons for it? How can you fix the problems for the reasons that you found? Post a 250-350 word response answering the questions above.Explanation / Answer
1. What is this address ? What is it called and how is it assigned ?
Ans : If your computer is set to obtain IP address automatically, in ( internet options -> properities -> IPV4 -> obtain IP address automatically) , and if it can't locate a DHCP ( Dynamic Host Configuration Protocal ),then it will likely produce the IP address of the form 169.254.x.x.
Note : The DHCP server is most likely router or modem
The IP address range : 169.254.0.1 to 169.254.255.254. ( Default class B )
subnet mask : 255.255.0.0.( Subnet mask for class B )
2. What are some possible reasons to it ?
Ans : Getting a 169.254.x.x IP address tells us that the machine cannot reach the DHCP server over the network.
possible reasons could be :
a. Almost all situations that result in a 169.254.x.x IP address are flagged as “limited connectivity
b. Can't locate a DHCP server ( problem may be with the router )
c. perhaps there’s no DHCP server to hand out IP addresses, But when it gives up, it invokes what’s called Automatic Private IP Addressing, or APIPA, and makes up its own IP address. And those “made up IP addresses all begin with 169.254.
d If you’re connected via a NAT ( Network Address Translation) router, then either your computer is not actually connected on the network to that router, or the router itself isn’t responding to the DHCP request.
3. How can you fix the problems for the reasons that you found ?
