Explanation / Answer

The use of organizational resources for personal gains is totally unethical and unprofessional practice. Nowadays majority of the organizations clearly notify this basic ethics in their code of conduct to every employee. But still, as in the give case scenario, the employee found guilty, violating the code of conduct and employee not only using the organization computer but also the information within an organization for his personal gain then he must be punished.

But it depends on the organization's beliefs also. If organization believe in their people and have invested in their employees enough to develop their skill set for the organization then for his first mistake manager should issue him a show-cause notice and should penalize him with some monetary penalty. Further, a training should be organized for such employee. Firing an employee spread very negative vibes within the organization and portray that management doesn’t believe in their employees. If such repetition occurs then it is must to take strict action against such employee.

For a nonprofit organization, a clearly defined code of conduct and ensuring proper training can help to avoid such incidences of an ethical dilemma. Code of conduct defines the ethics, beliefs and manner of an organization and tell all the stakeholder about how he/she should behave while working with an organization. All nonprofit organization can’t have same Code of conduct. Because it depends on the field in which organization is working. Code of conduct is specially designed according to the belief and the goal of the organization and what organization wants to portray to outside world about the organization.
