Question

Problem #8 Consider a processor with four different instruction classes and the execution times for each instruction class are shown below for a benchmark program. (i) By how much is the total time reduced if the time for FP operations is reduced by 20%? (ii) By how much is the time for INT operations reduced if the total time is reduced by 20%? (iii) Can the total time be reduced by 20% by reducing only the time for branch instruction? (iv) By how much is the total time reduced if the time for both FP and Load/Store instructions is reduced by 20%? FP INT Load/Store Branch Total Time Instructions Instructions Instructions Instructions 85 s 40 s 250 s

Explanation / Answer

(i) 20% of 70 s = 14 s.

Total time = 250 - 14 = 236 s

(ii) If 20 % of total time is reduced then 20% of INT operation also reduced.

20% of 250 s = 50 s

20% of 55 s = 11 s

(iii) No, since to reduce total time by 20% we need to cut off 50 s somewhere and branch instructions take 40 s. Thus we can't reduce 50 s.

(iv) 20 % of 85 s = 17 s

20 % of 70 s = 14 s

Thus total time 250 - 17 - 14 = 219 s
