Lab 1 Expected Skills Due Friday 09/24 . Be able to download and activate MATLAB or Mathematica * Be able to use the software to regenerate the quadric surface for each equation Recognize the type of surface Match the equation with the corresponding graph. Please use the software page to include all your inputs, outputs and answers and hand a hard copy in class. Mathematica code Match each of the following equations with the appropriate graph below (b) 2-+:2-1 (c) y-22+2 (d) 2 +2:21 (e) 9r242 21 (g) 922+2:2 (h) y2-2

Explanation / Answer

For the following functions first express z as a function of y.

For example, for the first equation: z=+-(1-x2-4y2)1/2 .

Now in matlab ,write the following code:

z1 = @(x,y) +sqrt((1-x.^2 -4* y.^2)/9 )%for the positive part of the equation
z2 = @(x,y) -sqrt((1-x.^2 -4* y.^2)/9 )%for the negative part of the equation.

fsurf(z1)
hold on
fsurf(z2)

You will have your plot of the equation.

Using the same idea for every equation answers are as follows:

a.VII

b.II

c.VI

d.VIII

e.IV

f.III

g.I

h.V
