Jack M. is the Technology Coordinator of Volunteers in Providence Schools (VIPS), a non-profit organization that provides academic and social support to students enrolled in grades K-12 in the Providence, RI public school system. Jack has asked a team of students to prepare a recommendation report for the best choice of assistive technology—computer hardware and software—to help disabled students to use computers. Some needed items may include Braille keyboards, voice recognition software, and devices to help students with motor impairments type and use the Internet. Jack’s background is in computer programming and he has a thorough general knowledge of PC hardware and software. For him to investigate the available products and read articles about them would be too time-consuming, however, because Jack is blind. Jack will use the team's recommendation to help him decide which products to purchase.  


When preparing the first draft of the recommendation report, a student in the team drafts a comparison table to aid the team in reviewing the criteria for product selection. The team knows that the table is useless for Jack, who reads by using voice recognition software. They decide, however, to include the table in the report. Jack’s supervisor, Terry A., has normal vision, and the table may help her see at a quick glance how much money the organization may need to spend on acquiring the equipment. Since Terry will read only a few limited parts of the report to help her understand what Jack is spending money on, the team decides to place the comparison table in an Appendix at the end of the report.
