Explanation / Answer

First, when using qt and qnorm, does it return a positive or negative value? There are different ways of calculating the critical value, but make sure that zz and tdftdf is ultimately positive, otherwise your confidence interval will be the wrong way around, i.e. (upper value, lower value) instead of (lower value, upper value).

Second, you have to carefully decide on the value to use in the qtand qnorm functions. Similar to the probability tables, the qtand qnorm functions return the ZZ and TT values that gives the area to the left of these values equal to a specified probability. For a 95% confidence interval, we need the area to the left of zz plus the area to the right of zz in the normal distribution to be equal to 5%. Therefore the area to the left should be equal to 2.5%, and the area to the right also equal to 2.5%.
