Question

Homework2 Homework 2 Due September 27, 2018 Table 1 2017 2018 2017 2018 2017 2018 Davic West LA Davie NYC NYC LA LA Andre West Andre West 1) List the one candidate key for table I 2) List the non-prime attributes for table 3) List the non-trivial functional dependencies for table . You may optionally omit those whose left hand side is a superkey 4) Which of the following normal forms is Table I in? Choose all which apply from the following list: INF. 2NF. 3NF, BCNF 5) For each normal form which it is not in, demonstrate why it is not in that normal form by describing the normal form violation for that normal form

Explanation / Answer

1. Candidate keys are set of attributes which can uniquely identify the data.
Candidate Keys are A and B. The combination of both can uniquely identify the row in the table.

2. An attribute which is not a part of the candidate key is non-prime attributes. Columns C and D are non-prime attributes of table 1.

3. Trivial functional dependency occurs when one attribute is a subset of another. There are three non-trivial dependencies.
A -> B
A -> C
A -> D

B, C, and D is not a subset of A.

4. The table is in 1NF since each column has an atomic value and it doesn't have any multiple values.

5. 2nd NF fails since non-prime attributes C dependent on Name, not Year. There is a partial dependency.
3NF requires data should be in 2NF since the first condition itself fails, it cannot.
