ercise -Chapter Short-Term Scheduling Problem 1 Brilienze Consultants has been entrusted with the task of evaluating a business plan that has been divided into four sections-marketing, finance, operations, and human resources. Arya, Faris, Utami, and Shafa form the evaluation team. Each of them has expertise in a certain field and tends to finish that section faster. The estimated times taken by each team member for each section have been outlined in the table below. Further information states that each of these individuals is paid Rp 800,000/hour. Assign each member to a different section such that Brilienze Consultants's overall cost is minimized a) b) What is the total cost of these assignments? Times Taken by Team Member s for Different Sections (minutes) Marketing Finance Operations HR Arya Faris Utami Shafa 80 20 40 65 120 5 100 35 125 145 85 25 140 160 45 75

Explanation / Answer

Question 1:

First lets look at marketing. Faris takes the least time in Marketing and highest in all others. So he should be allotted Marketing.

In HR least time is taken by Utami so she should be allocated HR.

Now in finance and operations, Shafa takes the least time in both. So to decide which one goes to shafa and which one goes to arya, we will sum up the minutes in both case. If operations is given to shafa and finance to arya, total time would be 25+120 = 145. In reverse case it would be 35+125 = 160. So the first case allocation is cost effective

Total time is 210 minutes = 3.5 hours; So total cost = 3.5*800,000 = Rp 2,800,000

Question 2:

To solve this use the Johnsons rule.

From the table, find the operation having least time. If that operation is the first one then place the job on the earliest available slot. If that operation is the second one, place it on the last available slot. Repeat the same steps till the whole sequence is complete.

In this case, Job E operation 1 is smallest (2 hours) so place it first

E _ _ _ _ _

Next is job D operation 1, and job F operation 2. Since the are different operations as per the above rule, D comes in the earliest available slot and F comes in the latest available slot

E-D _ _ _ F

Next is Job B Operation 2 (4 hours) which comes in the last available slot

E-D _ _ B-F

Similarly the last 2 jobs are arranged and the final sequence is E-D-C-A-B-F

Marketing Finance Operations HR Arya 80 120 125 140 Faris 20 115 145 160 Utami 40 100 85 45 Shafa 65 35 25 75
