What is 'Operations Management'

Operations management refers to the administration of business practices to create the highest level of efficiency possible within an organization. It is concerned with converting materials and labor into goods and services as efficiently as possible to maximize the profit of an organization. Operations management teams attempt to balance costs with revenue to achieve the highest net operating profit possible.

Operations management involves utilizing resources from staff, materials, equipment and technology. Operations managers acquire, develop and deliver goods to clients based on client wants and the abilities of the company.

Specific Responsibilities of Operations Management

Operations management handles various strategic issues including determining the size of manufacturing plants and project management methods, and implementing the structure of information technology networks. Explanation / Answer

1) Focused and diffused thinking are important for everybody. Focused thinking is to focus on a problem or to focus on certain issue. Like when i work on a removing a bottleneck or an obstacle that is tampering the operations of a plant, then i apply focused thinking. Focused thinking is based on the past experience and knowledge.

Diffused thinking on the other hand is not so focused thinking. I would not intently sit and think about the problem but rather that would run behind my mind while i was on other work. Like for example, if the sales orders in the department are high with highly prioritized jobs, and if being a production manager, i need to increase the numbers, efficiency and effectiveness, then that thing of how do i fully utilize the plant, and supply-chain activities will keep on lingering in my mind. In the other words, what ever i do, i try to diffuse my attention to multiple things.

2) Chunking is to break down the things. If i need to memorize few chemical formulae, or chemical names of any product i use, i use chunking. Chunking is a strategy used to reduce the cognitive load on what one learns. Generally learner breaks down a bigger unit of information to small units of information which are used in memorizing more easily without much load on the brain.

3) Always ensuring that the work is not delayed for tomorrow. Every work once started should not be delayed for later. In order to practice procastination, one has to write down what all tasks are to be performed that particular day. All the tasks that are finished are checked and the task that is unfinished will go as a first task to be completed next day. That way, all the incomplete tasks will get the first priority. By doing so, there will not be a bottleneck in the system. It helps in increasing the efficiency of the work.

4) Short-term memory has limited storage capacity resistant to overcrowding in any form. It just cannot take any overload. On the other hand, long-term memory is limitless for all practical purposes. Any information transferred from short-term memory to long-term memory will have a place for permanent storage.

Long-term memory differs from short-term memory in the kind of information that is most easily stored. Information is usually stored in short-term memory in terms of the physical qualities of the experience. In order to convert short time memory to long term memory, one has to constantly support the brain in memorizing what they have learnt.
