Question

(i) What is the basic purpose of employing work sampling techniques? What are the applications or uses of work sampling? (ii) The following data were obtained during the course of the day to establish standard time for a lathe machine operation by means of work sampling: total number of observations- 150, number ofobservations opertor idle-50, average performance rating = 150%, total time worked per day = 480 min., number of pieces produced per day = 250 pcs. The company allows 5% for personal, 5% for unavoidable delays and 5% for fatigue in establishing time standards. Determine the standard time in min./pc. 6. (ii) Assume that the work sampling study was continued for the second day and a total of 300 observations were obtained, of these observations, the operator was found idle 75 times. 99%

Explanation / Answer

6.i. work sampling helps to determine standard rate to a work and how the workers are performing their work based on standard work. it is like a benchmark working measurement and based on this it can be measure the productivity of workers. usually when the output is in units, this sampling will be useful, and it only measures the quantity of output, but not the quality aspects of output.

ii.

ii. the following data is observed from the above problem:

total number of observations- 150

number of observations operation idle- 50

average performance rate- 150%

total time worked per day- 480 minutes

number of pieces produced per day- 250 units

allowance time- 15%

average time per one unit production= duration of time/number of units per day

= 480/250= 1.92 minutes per unit

Effective time= 1.92(150/250)= 1.152

Normal time= effective time * performance rate= 1.152*150%= 1.728

standard time= normal time+ per cent allowance on normal time

= 1.728+ (15/100)1.728= 1.728+0.2592= 1.987

the standard time= 1.987 minutes per unit production

iii. out of 300 observations, 75 observations are idle, and the remaining 225 observations carry and completed fully with in the requirements.
