2. A local oil and gas company in Houston hires the following categories of employees: 1. Petroleum Engineers at all levels (entry level, senior level, middle-management level, etc.). 2. Clerical employees (entry level only). 3. Senior management staff (both internal and external searches are done). The company employs about 3,000 employees in the Houston area. The company is interested in revising its compensation package to be externally competitive. They want to conduct their own market survey of wages and benefits paid by the competitors. Help them identify the relevant labor market, competitors, and the key areas they should focus on in designing the survey. Note that I do not expect an actual survey but the areas they should cover in terms of whom to survey, what to survey, and where to survey.

Considering the requirements of the company to extensively hire various designations and various levels offering competitive packages to enusre they are competitive in the industry, below are the areas which should be covered in the survey regarding the workforce availability and compensation package -

1. Employees from other firms at similar positions can be contacted through by employing an online survey tool or outsouring to a market research firm.

2. Secondary sources of data like online content, job comparison sites like glassdoor, payscale etc. can be explored to find any information on compensation package of similar positions at competitor firms.

3. The firm can explote population census, count of literate and graduate employees as per the requirement in and around the areas.

4. Apart from the locations within Houston, the firm should also explore nearby locations for clerical level staff and even other cities for engineer level and senior management level staff.
