Question

Write a GPSS/H model of the following situation:
Parts arrive to a work cell every 125±100 seconds. They are transported to the inspection
station by a conveyor. Time for conveyance is 60 seconds. At the end of the
conveyor, the parts are tested by a single inspector, taking 80 to 140 seconds, uniformly
distributed. After inspection, the parts are assembled by a single assembler. The assembler
performs a setup, taking 10±8 seconds, followed by assembly, taking 40 to 180
seconds, uniformly distributed. Assume there is an infinite buffer space in front of the
inspection station and between the two work stations. Simulate until 500 parts exit the
assembly station.
Run your model and answer the following questions:
a) What does a Transaction represent?
b) What are the resources in the system?
c) How long does it take to process 500 parts?
d) What are the utilization rates of the resources?

Explanation / Answer

a) This transaction represent how the various parts are going to be inspected in industry.

b) Resources in this system are:
work cell, conveyer, single inspector, assembler.

c) First we shall calculate for one part time taken:
125(work cell) + 60(conveyor) + 140 (inspector) + 10 (setup) + 180(assembling)
= 125+60+140+10+180 = 515 seconds

so for 500 parts: 500 x 515 seconds = 71.52 hours

d) utilization rates of Resources are:
work cell = 125/515 = 24.2%
conveyor = 60/515 = 11.6%
Inspector = 140/525 = 27.1%
setup = 10/525 = 0.2%
assembling = 180/525 = 34.95%
