Question

Discuss the ethical and values issues related to databases, with a particular focus on privacy. The following questions offer ways to address pieces of this larger question.

What do we mean by privacy?

How does our society define privacy?

How do other societies define privacy?

How much real business data (live and archived) should programmers be able to see?

How can a business balance restricting access with the need to have programmers who have access on a production system?

What sort of pre-hire (or pre-transfer) screening should be done on database developers who will be able to access business data?

How can the accuracy of information be promoted?

Who owns the data an organization collects?

What rights does the organization have to the data? (can it be shared or sold? can it be used for purposes other than those for which it was collected?)

What responsibility does the organization have? (must it keep the data up to date? must it inform the person of what data it is collecting?)

What rights does an individual have to the data an organization collects? (does the individual have a right to see the data? does the individual have a right to forbid some uses?)
