Question
Introduction
Understanding basic elements and operating principles of simple circuits is a crucial foundation for
building and understanding (more complicated) digital circuits. This simulation is meant to introduce
basic circuit principles to students with no or little background.
Purpose
The purpose of this lab is to:
• Gain experience with online simulations and experimentation, and
• Gain an understanding of Ohm’s Law by explaining how resistance, current and voltage are
related.
Simulation and Questions
We will use a simulation entitled, Ohm’s Law, located at
https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/ohms-law
1) What are three different combinations of I and R that achieve a voltage of 6.0 Volts?
2) Describe the relationship between I and R. Why is this?
3) What would happen if you could decrease the resistance to 0? Explain.
Explanation / Answer
1. Just set the value of voltage to 6.0 V and change the values of I and R in the given pattern to get 6.0 V as voltage.
2. According to Ohm's law, current flowing in a direction is inversely proprtional to the resistance. Since, we know current flows due to flow of charges. The more is the resistance the less is the movement of charges and less is the current and vice versa. That's why, current is inversely proportional to resistance.
3. Though that's not a practical case, But if somehow you manage to decrease the resistance to 0, the current source will draw infinite amount of current. That's it will start behaving like as a superconductor.
Current, I(mA) Resistance (ohm) Voltage (V) 12.0 500 6.0 6.0 1000 6.0 24.0 250 6.0Related Questions
