Question

Operating System file system management:

We just recently upgraded our user storage capacity Storage Area Network with a strategy for the next five years. Currently 800 users use about 60 Terabytes of storage, the new SAN was installed with about 180 TB to last the company 5 years, this was an extrapolation of the current storage needs and the growth patterns of the last 5 years. Still, organizations do go through unexpected growth which we rely on policy and constant monitoring to keep disk storage usage in check.

Explanation / Answer

The trends of memory usage should be observed periodically and made as a report to analyze whether the assumption for 5 years will be served or not.

Every day tge disk usage has to be checked because of 2 issues :

Internal fragmentation where a process is more memory than required and hence it is wasted.

External fragmentation where there is no continuous memory to accomodate a single process.

So avoid internal fragmentation by always assigning the smallest block possible for any process.

External fragmentation can be avoided by shuffling memory blocks to make continuous memory blocks callled as Compaction
