Question

Objectives Learn about computer data ports Learn about Web search engines Learn how to access local area networks within the university Description In this lab you are introduced to various computer ports including serial, parallel, USP, and Firewire. I will show you how to physically identify these ports in computers and on the operating system. You will also learn how to access the campus network using windows 7/XP. Assignment Write a one-page report describing technical definitions and capabilities of parallel, serial, USB, and Firewire ports. Your report must also include the list of steps required for a computer connected to a local area network to access other computers connected to the same network

Explanation / Answer

Parallel port:

In the early years of computers, parallel ports are most common interface on a computer that is intended primarily for printers and other devices. Speed transfer data is limited to 150 Kbps and could only send a range of ten meters.

Serial port:

These are also called COM ports used to connect devices like modem via serial interface connection means the data bit in the order of one second. It is mostly located at back of the PC and it's transfer speed is limited to 57KBps and maximum cable length of 50 meters.

USB port:

These ports became standard on 1998 and it is a type of serial port with a wide range of different devices such as keyboards, printers, scanners and mice to connect to. it's transmission speed of 12 MBps upto 480 MBps. This technology also covers the external devices like camera, and other technology realted items.

FireWire port:

IEEE 1394 is a family of high speed bidirectional serial transmission ports that connect PCs to each other, digital devices to PCs, digital devices to each other. The most common version of IEEE 1394 is IEEE 1394a which is popularly known as Firewire 400. It is one of the fastest and most flexible ports used on personal computers.
