ok this is a clear example of facultative anaerobes. however, talking about adaptation, from aerobic to anaerobic condition without entering fermentation process. This means that the organism requires another terminal electron acceptor in absence of Oxygen for synthesizing ATP via ETC during its anaerobic respiration.

since, O2 is not available, the organism muct be able to utilize Sulfur, Sulfates(SO42-) or nitrates (NO3-) as there final electron acceptor. these are also good oxidizing agents (although not as efficient as O2). thus, the tranfer of electrons through ETC continues and the organism can respire anaerobic without going into fermentation process.
