Question

You're the operations manager at an urban hopsital and you're evaluating a proposal from a hopsital equipment company that manufactures oxygen delivery systems. The company is developing a new manifold that they promise will operate for two years before any possibility of a breakdown. As delivering oxygen 24/7 is a requirement, you've asked the company for the testing data on these manifolds. As they want your business they provided the following data on 10 manifolds that went through accelerated testing. The results are below one unit failed at 356 operating hours one unit failed at 854 operating hours one unit failed at 3466 operating hours one unit failed at 5260 operating hours one unit failed at 13760 operating hours five units successfully competed 20,000 operating hours. a. determine the failure rate of this manifold. b. determine the Mean Time To Failure of this manifold. c. Based on the results, are the company's claims about the manifold operating for two years correct? Based on the results, are the company's claims about the manifold operating for two years correct?

Explanation / Answer

a. Failure rate is defined as no. of failure divided by no. of hours. There are 5 failures over a total of 23696 hours

Hence Failure rate= 5/(356+854+3466+5260+13760)=0.000211 failure per hour

b. Mean time to failure= total time/No. of units under test= 20000/5=4000 hours per unit

c. Since there are 17520 hours in two years, hence no. of failure per two year = 23696/17520= 1.35.

Since there is atleast 1 failure in two years hence company’s claim about manifold operating for two years is incorrect.
