The manager wants to determine if the length of the line impacts the potential sales. her study reveals on average, 8 cars per minute try to enter the drive through area, but 40% of these cars are dismayed by the long line and simply move on without entering the line and placing orders. Assume that no car entering the line leaves without service. On average, how long does a car spend in the drive through line? Using littles law concept

Explanation / Answer

As oer Little's law :

Rate of Input to the system ( R) x Throughput time through the system ( T) = Inventory in the system ( I)

Given are following :

Rate of input to the system = Number of cars trying to enter the drive through system = 8 / minute

Inventory in the system = Average number of cars waiting in the line = 20 cars

Let Throughput time through the system = Average time a car spends in the driveway = T minutes

Since , R X T = I

8 x T = 20

Or, T = 20/8 = 2.5 minutes

ON AVERAGE A CAR SPENDS 2.5 MINUTES IN THE DRIVE THROUGH LINE
