Question

Use the table below which shows date about daily depending flights at an airport to answer the questions which follow. For all diagrams, you must use a software applications (MS Vision). No hand drawn images will be accepted. Each airline at the airport has a unique Airline ID and an airline Name Each terminal at the airport has a unique terminal ID and a fixed number of gates Each airline is permanently assigned to one (and only one) terminal at the airport Each terminal can have multiple airlines assigned to it Each day (date) the table records the number of departing flights at the airport for each airline Using the AIRPORT Table, describe an example that illustrates the insertion anomaly. Using the AIRPORT Table, describe an example that illustrates the deletion anomaly Using the AIRPORT Table, describe an example that illustrates the modification anomaly. Despite full key functional dependencies, partial functional dependencies (if any), and transitive functional dependencies (if any) in the AIRPORT Table, (i.e. draw the dependency diagram) Show the result of normalizing the AIRPORT Table to 2NF. (i.e. Show the dependency diagrams) Show the result of normalizing the AIRPORT Table to 3NF. (i.e. draw the dependency diagram) Using the set of tables resulting from question 6, describe how the anomalies shown in questions 1, 2 and 3 are eliminated

Explanation / Answer

1.
Insert Anomaly occurs when certain attributes cannot be inserted into the database without the presence of other attributes

In the Airport table, if we want to introduce new Terminal here say D, it is not possible since the
terminal has no airline assigned to it. This is referred to as insertion anamoly.

2.

Delete Anomaly exists when certain attributes are lost because of the deletion of other attributes

Here in Airport table, if we delete the last row i.e. SWA Airline ID, then we lose the information about the Terminal C also.

3.
Modification Anomaly exists when one or more instances of duplicated data is updated, but not all.

Here in Airport table, if we were to update the information about NumberOfGates at any terminal then we have to do the same at every row
where it is present.

To update, the NumberOfGates from 20 to 30 for Terminal A, we have to update the information in 4 rows.
